Bonjour! This week’s carte postale features Cannery Row in Monterey, located about 120 miles/ 190 km south of San Francisco, California.

In 1776, Spain named Monterey the capital of Alta California (“Upper California”). When Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1822, Monterey became the capital of Mexico. However, the city has never been the official capital of California since it became a state in 1850!

Monterey is one of the places I’d love to visit again as soon as stay-at-home orders are lifted. It’s got sun, surf, and seafood!

Here are my favorites:

The Bookworks

At this shop, they sell books on one side and good coffee on the other. They have the friendliest baristas, too. It’s located about 3 miles/ 5 km northwest of Monterey in a town called Pacific Grove.

Cooper’s Pub & Restaurant [as of 2021: this restaurant is permanently closed] 🙁

My family and I have been going to this restaurant since it was called Bullwackers. My favorite items from their menu include fried calamari and juicy burgers.

Dennis the Menace Playground in El Estero Park

Rent a paddleboat and explore the lake, where you can spot some pretty birds.

Monterey Bay Aquarium

If you visit, don’t plan to do anything else for the day. You’ll want to take your time and enjoy. There’s so much to see and do here.

Monterey Fisherman’s Wharf

It’s a lovely place for a leisurely stroll. Get abalone shell jewelry from one of the many shops along the boardwalk. Enjoy some clam chowder served in a bread bowl.

Where to See Monarch Butterflies

Every October, thousands of Monarch butterflies make a stop in a eucalyptus grove in Pacific Grove. I hope to see them there one day!
