Bonjour! This week’s carte postale comes from Strasbourg, located near the border with Germany in the Grand Est (Alsace) region of France.

  • Between 1870 and 1945, Strasbourg switched between France and Germany four times
  • Although the roofs from the bridges over the Ill River (bottom left) were removed in 1784, they are still called Ponts Couverts (covered bridges), or Gedeckte Brücken in German
  • Construction on the Cathédrale Notre Dame (right) began in 1015 and was completed over 400 years later in 1439
