Bonjour! This week’s carte postale comes from Strasbourg, located near the border with Germany in the Grand Est (Alsace) region of France.
- Between 1870 and 1945, Strasbourg switched between France and Germany four times
- Although the roofs from the bridges over the Ill River (bottom left) were removed in 1784, they are still called Ponts Couverts (covered bridges), or Gedeckte Brücken in German
- Construction on the Cathédrale Notre Dame (right) began in 1015 and was completed over 400 years later in 1439

Have you been to Strasbourg?
Strasbourg is next on my list of cities to visit in France (well, one day!) Have you been there? Please share your memories and suggestions – I’d love to hear from you!
Until the next Wednesday Postcard, à bientôt!

Yes, I’ve been there several times — it’s not far from Frankfurt, after all — and so far I have posted four blog entries about it: opera, boat trip, train travel and chocolate museum. I was planning on going there again this spring, but then corona interfered. https://operasandcycling.com/category/france/strasbourg/

So lucky you live so close to Strasbourg – I hope you get to go there again soon. I just read your informative posts – I like the variety of things to see and do. I love your pictures, too (the gorgeous train station looks like a destination in itself!) I’ve taken notes 👍🏼 Thanks for sharing, Don!

I’ve been to Strasbourg twice, both times for the world-famous Christmas markets. It’s truly a magical place in a magical region of France, and the city is a great base for day trips to quaint, smaller cities and villages like Colmar, Eguisheim, and Riquewihr. Hope you can go for the winter holidays some time!

When I lived in Metz, I was about 1hr 45mins away from Strasbourg and I had some fabulous weekends there. I never made it to the Christmas market, unfortunately. Maybe one day, in the future!
