Now playing on my French song playlist:
Title: Non, je ne regrette rien
Songwriters: Charles Dumont, Michel Vaucaire
Performed by: Édith Piaf
Lyrics I like:
Non, je ne regrette rien
Ni le bien, qu’on m’a fait
Ni le mal, tout ça m’est bien égal
Non, rien de rien
Non, je ne regrette rien
Car ma vie, car mes joies
Aujourd’hui, ça commence avec toi
Translation:
No, I don’t regret anything
Nor the good that was done to me
Neither evil, it’s all the same to me
No, nothing at all
No, I don’t regret anything
Because my life, because my joys
Today, it begins with you
🎶
The legendary French chanteuse, Édith Piaf recorded this song in 1960. She dedicated it to the French Foreign Legion during the Algerian War, also known as the War of 1 November. It lasted for over seven years from 1954 until March 19, 1962, when Algeria gained its independence from France.
Over the years, the song has been used numerous times in movies, television shows, and advertisements, including this one which ran in 2020 here in the United States for a leading insurance company: Allstate TV commercial
This year, the song is featured in a TV ad for a brand of multi-purpose cleaning products that’s based in the United Kingdom: Zoflora TV ad
Until next Music Monday, have a beautiful week ahead!

A classic! I first heard it in the film “Inception,” and then once more when I took French in high school and college. Edith Piaf is a French icon, and I’m glad you shared this song this week!

I did not know about the link to the war in Algeria! Fascinating!

I agree. I find it incredible how one song could be used in both ways: weighty (military conflict) and lighthearted (selling coffee, chocolate, insurance, and cleaning products)?! 🎶 It’s timeless, for sure!

Yes, it just shows how folk are able to re-invent things, without the baggage, when it suits!

Hands down one of my very favorite songs in any language made better because it is in French. Love Edith Piaf, the little sparrow. I was so happy to visit her grave at Pere Lachaise and see how revered she was. So many people visit and it is so well taken care of.

Hi Diana, this song is one of my favorite Édith Piaf songs, too. I’ve visited Père Lachaise, but sadly didn’t get to see her grave. It’s good to know that many people have taken good care of it, surely an expression of their love for the chanteuse. So cool you got a chance to see it!
