Bonjour ! I just got back from visiting the East Coast. As part of my birthday getaway, I went to Boston, Massachusetts and Portland, Maine.
I’m pleased to share this week’s carte postale, which features one of the most photographed lighthouses in the United States, the Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, located about 4 miles/ 6.4 km south of Portland.
- At the direction of George Washington, construction on the lighthouse began in 1787 and was completed in 1791, making it the oldest lighthouse in the United States
- It stands 80 feet (24 m) tall
- It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1973
I took the Portland City and Lighthouse Tour by trolley through Portland Discovery Land & Sea Tours. We couldn’t enter the light tower nor the keeper’s house, though, as those are open to the public one day a year!
The next Maine Open Lighthouse Day is September 9, 2023 when 300 lucky visitors will have the opportunity to climb up the tower!

More to come about my trip to Portland, Maine…

Over the years, I have accumulated hundreds of postcards from around the world, which I’ve either purchased from my local antique shops or received from thoughtful family and friends who know I collect them. When I travel, I also like to send myself a carte postale just for fun!
I hope these postcards will make you want to revisit a favorite vacation spot or to embark on a journey to the destination of your dreams.
And if you’ve been to the destination featured, tell me about your experience there – I’d love to hear from you.
Until the next Wednesday Postcard, take care!🦞

Bonjour Darlene,
Beautiful postcards and made all the more interesting with the history and stories that go with them. I am wishing that you had adequate time to enjoy Boston as well and partook of a beer with Norm at “Cheers”.The East Coast is a wonderful travel destination for all of us Californians.I hope you escaped the smoke blowing down from Canada. Keep the postcards and stories coming.

Bonjour Rusty,
Thank you! I did get a chance to visit the “Cheers” bar during my first visit years ago, but this time, I only caught a glimpse of it as our tour trolley drove by! Yes, during this visit to the East Coast, one of the top news stories was about the Nova Scotia wildfires. When I left, I’d heard the wildfires in Québec had started. In California, we’ve had our share of wildfires in recent years, so I definitely feel for everyone affected by the fires and the smoke. I hope all is well where you are. Stay tuned. More postcards and stories are on the way!

I’ve only been to Portland (so far) and I loved it. I can imagine the rest of Maine must be incredible, too. Thank you for the birthday wishes, Rebecca!
