Bonjour ! This week’s carte postale features the autumn skyline of Portland, Oregon and Mt. Hood in the background. I picked up this postcard during my visit to the Pacific Northwest city in the summer of 2023.
Fun facts about Portland, Oregon
– Portland, Oregon is named after Portland, Maine, the hometown of Francis Pettygrove, one of Portland, Oregon’s founders. Would you believe the name was decided by a coin toss? If the flip side of the coin had won, Portland would have been named Boston, after the hometown of the city’s other founder, Asa Lovejoy! The penny that was used to decide the town’s name can be viewed at the Oregon Historical Society Museum in Portland.
– The Columbia River north of Portland is the natural border with the state of Washington.
– There are a dozen bridges along the Willamette River, which runs through Portland. (It reminds me of the multiple bridges along the Seine in Paris!)
My weekend in Portland, Oregon
As an end-of-summer trip, my daughters and I went on a city break to Portland in July-August 2023. We got to explore the Portland Saturday Market, Powell’s City of Books (or simply, Powell’s Books – the world’s largest independent bookstore), as well as two incredible gardens, Lan Su Chinese Garden, and the Portland Japanese Garden.
More to come on my visit to Portland, Oregon…

Over the years, I have accumulated hundreds of postcards from around the world, which I’ve either purchased from my local antique shops or received from thoughtful family and friends who know I collect them. When I travel, I also like to send myself a carte postale just for fun!
I hope these postcards will make you want to revisit a favorite vacation spot or to embark on a journey to the destination of your dreams.
And if you’ve been to the destination featured, tell me about your experience there – I’d love to hear from you.
Until the next Wednesday Postcard, take care! 🦫

I had no idea that Portland was named after the same city in Maine; I figured it must’ve been a coincidence! It’s truly a gorgeous city, and it’s one I’d love to return to one day. Can’t wait to read about your visit there soon!

Isn’t that funny how Portland, Oregon got its name?! I’d heard about the coffee, doughnut, and beer culture in Portland, but was pleasantly surprised about the gardens! Yes, more about my visit coming soon (with pictures!) 😀
