This week’s carte postale features the Saguaro National Park located in Tucson, Arizona in the southwestern region of the United States.
This national park is named after saguaro (pronounced “sa-WAH-ro”), the type of cactus that is native to the Sonoran Desert area.
Thanks to my wonderful colleague who went there recently and sent me this postcard! During their visit, they enjoyed going on ranger walks, birding at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and stargazing on Mount Lemmon, the highest point in the Santa Catalina Mountains at over 9,000 feet.

Fun facts
- Saguaro National Park was established in 1994
- The roots of the saguaro cactus can extend to a diameter of 100 feet, but only inches deep
- The park is made up of two parts: The Rincon Mountain District (east of Tucson) and the Tucson Mountain District (west of Tucson) for a combined total of over 91,000 acres
When I think of deserts and cacti, this tall, green and prickly figure with two arms is the image that comes to mind! Now I know what it’s called and where to find them: Saguaro!
For more information about this symbol of the American southwest, visit the National Park Service website: The Saguaro Cactus 🌵

Over the years, I have accumulated hundreds of postcards from around the world, which I’ve either purchased from my local antique shops or received from thoughtful family and friends who know I collect them. When I travel, I also like to send myself a carte postale just for fun!
I hope these postcards will make you want to revisit a favorite vacation spot or embark on a journey to the destination of your dreams.
And if you’ve been to the destination featured, tell me about your experience there – I’d love to hear from you.
Thanks for reading Bonjour: A Francophile Blog!

Gorgeous! Reminds me of the road trip I did with my dad a few years ago through Arizona. The saguaros were so fascinating and, to some extent, look otherworldly! Thanks for sharing, Darlene 😊

Thanks for reading, Rebecca! Glad you and your dad got to see the saguaro cacti! I haven’t been to Saguaro NP (yet), but I remember seeing some saguaro in Scottsdale during a business trip. They are impressive! 🌵

The desert is a fascinating place. Edward Abbey’s book Desert Solitaire speaks volumes on this subject. Thanks for sharing this fitting tribute.
