Bonjour! This week’s carte postale features the 13th century Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims in northeast France.
Reims (pronounced like “Rrance”) is located in the Grand-Est region, the former administrative region of Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne, Lorraine.
Reims Cathedral
- was designed in the High Gothic style
- hosted the coronations of over 30 kings
- was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site List in 1991

I wonder if they still sell postcards like this today. It seems to have been hand-colored in the early 20th century, though today there is software that can create this effect with one or two clicks.

You’ve got a good eye, Don! The back of the (undated) postcard seems to indicate that color was added digitally. (I’ve updated my post to include a picture of the back of the postcard.) Thanks for sharing your post. Interesting to learn that Reims Cathedral inspired Victor Hugo! Glad you got to visit the historic site. I’d love to see it one day.

Do you mean because of the word “offset”? I think that’s just the kind of printing technology they used to print the card. I’d still place the photo in the early 20th century, because the landscaping and the surrounding buildings are different now.

Such a beautiful cathedral…I didn’t spend too long in Reims, but I did enjoy visiting the cathedral and also partaking in Champagne tasting. Your postcard brings back the memories!
