List three jobs you’d consider pursuing if money didn’t matter.
First of all, let’s be clear: money matters. But if I imagine that I didn’t have to work for money that would mean I’d also have the invaluable gift of more time!
That is, more time to volunteer in the community, travel around the world, and be an after-school program provider!
Community volunteer
Some of the volunteer work I’d love to do would include reading books to children at the library, cuddling babies needing special care at hospitals, and sorting food donations at the local food bank.

World traveler
I’d also like to fill my starving passport with more stamps and see more of the world. I would spend a minimum of two weeks in every city and do volunteer work during my stay.
After-school program provider
I’d also pursue the job of operating a free after-school program where students can go to get nutritious snacks, create art, learn a new language (French?), or just be. It would provide parents and guardians peace of mind knowing their children are waiting for them in a safe place.
I got my inspiration from a childhood experience.
Like many Gen X people who grew up in the ‘80s, I was a latchkey kid. After school, my brother and I would do our homework and prepare dinner (or make rice, at least) while waiting for our mother to come home from work. Then we’d all have dinner together.
During summer breaks, my brother’s friends would come over, eat, play video games in the living room, or play tag in the backyard. Meanwhile, I’d be upstairs in my room playing with my cat, Amiee, or singing along with my Sheena Easton and Pat Benatar 45s.
My brother’s friends usually went home around the time their parents came home. Wait a minute – Did I unknowingly provide free babysitting?! Probably. I like to believe the kids found comfort and security (not to mention a variety of Pop-Tarts!) at my house.
If I didn’t have to work for money, these are some of the jobs I’d pursue!
But back to reality: I get to go to work every day and for that I am truly grateful.
And to everyone who works hard for the money, this one’s for you:
Thanks for reading Bonjour: A Francophile Blog!

Three solid jobs! World traveler sounds up my alley, too (if I suddenly won the lottery or had access to unlimited money, haha). Although I’m not Gen-X, I actually had a similar upbringing in which I was a “latch-key kid,” as both of my parents worked, and my sister and I would come home after school, do homework/watch TV, and wait for them to come home. Granted, we did have a housekeeper/nanny in our earlier years, but as we got older, my sister and I were pretty much self-sufficient. I considered it normal growing up, and I don’t know what kids/parents are doing these days!

Thanks for reading, Rebecca. I’m observing that more and more schools are offering extracurricular activities on campus, which is great so parents don’t have to pay for after-school care or supervision.
Unfortunately, not all schools provide those activities. Plus I believe it’s good for students’ mental health to simply decompress a little before they jump in to do homework or chores. If I won the lottery, I’d love to create a space like that (and I’d make it free!)
I knew “world traveler” would resonate with you as you already live that life! I enjoy reading about your incredible adventures on your blog. Keep going!
